Phase I: Plans Instruction

First and foremost, I have a standard aligned to this introductory lesson. Within the Arizona Common Core Standards is the standard:
3.OA.3. Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem. (See Table 2.)
3.OA.4. Determine the unknown whole number in a multiplication or division equation relating three whole numbers. For example, determine the unknown number that makes the equation true in each of the equations 8 × ? = 48, 5 = ?? ÷ 3, 6 × 6 = ?.
Since my target group is 3rd grade, this is the perfect introductory lesson. My objectives are clearly stated by describing what I expect students to complete and be able to do by the end of this lesson:

Through using the smart board to interact with objects in a word problem, the students will understand what division is and utilize different strategies to use to solve division problems through examples.

I feel these goals are appropriate for students, especially since we discuss many different ways to think of division. This should be a fantastic introductory division lesson.
