Phase I: Assessing Prior Knowledge

If this were being taught to my targeted grade level students, it would be a large part of a unit based around the Revolutionary War era. I would start this whole unit with a diagnostic assessment such as a KWL chart to assess what they already know about this time, including the people within this era. By assessing prior knowledge I would expect to learn which of these historical figures are familiar names to my students and which figures they may have some knowledge about concerning who they were and what they did. This would also tell me if they know of any events in this period, which would concern the historical figures.
This information would be incredibly useful in the planning process to help assess which students would be interested in some of these historical figures. It also lets me know if students had been previously exposed to any of these historical figures/which figures should be covered more.
